About Nicky Poulin
Nicky possesses multiple yoga and wellness certifications from around the globe and has logged over 38,000 hours of teaching experience. These accreditations led Nicky to add a certified Canadian Yoga Alliance Accredited Instructor/Teacher Training to Ohana’s list of offerings. Nicky’s certification as a CCF Life Coach positions her to support clients who seek a well-rounded wellness journey. Specializing her classes for all round physical and mental wellbeing, trauma, grief, stress & anxiety. Nicky also instructs breathing techniques, mind body solutions, restorative, physical rehabilitation and more. Nicky has chronicled a successful two-pronged career which includes all aspects of graphic design and marketing. She is highly sought after as a subject matter expert in corporate branding, publishing, design, and fundraising. During her 30-year career trajectory, Nicky has held positions in both the private and public sector as well as simultaneously proving her ability as a thriving entrepreneur. Nicky is the founder of Ohana Yoga & Wellness Centre and Training Academy. She and her husband, Darren Renaud (passed) launched the business 24 years ago making Ohana a well-respected venue for those seeking enhanced wellness — mind, body, and spirit. With such vast knowledge, experience, and success as an entrepreneur, Nicky serves as a small business start-up mentor and is widely known as a generous contributor and supporter of key community initiatives.
Zumba is a fitness program that combines Latin and international music with dance moves. Zumba routines incorporate interval training. alternating fast and slow rhythms. To help improve cardiovascular fitness.
About Amanda Doherty
Amanda is a well-known Zumba instructor working with families at both the YMCA and EarlyON in North Bay, Ontario. She has been a Zumba instructor for 8 years and has over 20 yrs of experience in the health, fitness and recreation industry. Amanda enjoys travelling annually and has taught Zumba at resorts in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Cuba and Costa Rica. Her enthusiastic personality and smile is contagious.
Forest Therapy (as commonly referred to in North America), is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku (‘Forest Bathing’). A trained Forest Therapy Guide will facilitate a safe gentle walk in nature, providing “invitations” for sensory opening activities using our senses of sight, sound, taste and many others. A forest therapy walk engages participants with the natural world and reminds us that we are part of nature and not separate from it. Studies and research have demonstrated that Forest Therapy walks can have a wide array of health benefits to an individuals’ emotional and physical well-being including; reduced stressed, lowered blood pressure, improving mood and cognition. Other side effects during the walk can include increased relaxation, personal awareness as well as laughter, giggles and playfulness.
Participants can expect the forest therapy walk to take approximately 1.5-2 hours including time for “tea with the trees” concluding ceremony. Appropriate clothing (layering for warmth) and footwear is important to be comfortable outside in all types of weather. Suggested items to bring may include; Raincoat and/or warm coat, layering of clothes to accommodate getting warm or cold, sit-upon/small blanket for sitting on the ground, water bottle and/or personal snacks.
About Laura Kielpinski:
Laura Kielpinski is currently completing her final stages of training to become a certified Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). Laura has worked full time at the Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) since January 2002 and currently holds the role of Director of Education and Operations. She plans to incorporate Guided Forest Therapy walks into the CEC program offerings as it provides many benefits for all ages and abilities.
Laura is also a qualified OCT teacher, GPS Instructor and Instructor Trainer for the National Green Check GPS Certification program, Instructor for the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s “Project Wild” and “Below Zero” programs. She holds an honours degree in Physical and Health Education (specializing in Outdoor Adventure Leadership) and a diploma in Environmental Science from Laurentian University, as well as her Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University in Outdoor Experiential Education.
Laura has taught part-time for the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University, as well as courses for Canadore College in the Sport and Recreation Department. Laura holds certifications in Standard First Aid and CPR, Wilderness First Aid (80 hour WFR), ORKCA (canoe training) as well as risk management and safety planning. Her passions and interests include sharing her love of the natural world with all those around her and helping others to find comfort and enjoyment from spending time in the outdoors. She enjoys being active in a variety of outdoor activities (mountain biking, running, canoeing, hiking, and cross country skiing) with her friends, family and two children.
Participants in this workshop will explore burnout theory and interventions in an interactive way. Topics will include: working through the stress cycle, balancing work and play, saying no, negotiating for your wellbeing and why quitting is not failure.
About Shannon Clausen:
Shannon is a Nurse Practitioner with 23 years experience in nursing. Like many in health care, she cares deeply and also wants to do the best she can but understands how hard it can be sometimes to balance all the balls (parenting, work, education, community etc). She has experienced burnout on many levels and understands the challenges. Through her own personal journey and through training in a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology she has learned interventions that have been beneficial to her. Shannon wants to share what she has learned to help others learn ways to love their career/job and to find balance in life again.
Due to the recent pandemic, people are suffering from stress and extreme burnout. Here you will enjoy healing and relax with ancient techniques that are used in the Andean mountains of South America.
About Samantha Izquierdo
Samantha Izquierdo is an educator, award-winning singer, and a composer, with experience in the field of music therapy. She offers a unique course where you will be experimenting with rhythms and traditional dancing from the Andes. The focus will be on musical traditions used by ancient tribes to celebrate the harvest and the anticipation of new beginnings. In this course, you will also discover the relaxing beat of healing drums and join in drum circles. This retreat component will help you soothe stress, energize and learn from a different culture.
During this session participants will RELAX RELEASE AND RESTORE BALANCE through PLAYFUL CREATIVE EXPRESSION. The Session will begin with some relaxation techniques and then dive or edge in slowly one toe at a time (at your own pace) to release some emotions through curiosity and play with different mediums and see what emerges. Sharing your creation is optional, you can keep your art as a reminder of this practice or release it into the evening fire. Brenda want participants to know this is your restorative journey and you can move however it feels right for you.
If you prefer to use collage as part of your creative process please feel free to bring pictures/words etc that speak to you.
About Brenda McCammon
Brenda is a retired ER RN. She worked frontline through SARS and has lived through Burnout herself. She knows first hand how it can alter and disrupt our sense of peace, balance and our ability to be a fully functioning human being. Brenda will share her message of hope with participants. She knows that with Kindness and compassion you can restore balance and begin to feel and understand the wisdom of these life experiences and your amazing ability to heal.
Incredible healing can be found at the end of a pen/pencil or fingertips on keys. This workshop will be an independent learning experience however Shannon will be available to provide one on one assistance or guidance as required.
Narrative therapy provides multiple healing opportunities. Descriptions of different activities will be available.
Participants can choose one or all and take this time to work on them. If desired completed projects can be: shared with others, kept private as a work in progress or can even be released by burning them in the fire Saturday evening.
Mindfulness is defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn as: “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally”
Throughout the weekend participants will be provided opportunities to practice mindfulness in many different ways. Choose the one you like and bring it home with you .
